Date posted: 4th January 2007

We have gathered a few titles dealing with the Britannia and Conwy Bridges, always popular with the collector!
Listed below are the titles remaining after the Xmas Rush!

1.Edwin Clark - General Description of the Britannia and Conway Tubular Bridges on the Chester & Holyhead Railway. 1849

2.Thomas Jackson - The Tourists Guide to Britannia Bridge: containing a descriptive account of the towers, tubes, and stages; mode of floating the tubes; the hydraulic press; and of all objects of interest connected with this Wonder of the World. Also a particular account of the Conway Tubular Bridge, The Grand Menai Suspension Bridge, and other interesting information. Illustrated with numerous engravings. Eighth edition. 1851.

3.TG Cumming - Description of the Iron Bridges of Suspension now erecting over the Strait of Menai, at Bangor, and over the River Conway, in North Wales; with two views: also some account of the different bridges of Suspension in England and Scotland; particularly of Captain S Brown’s iron bar bridge over the River Tweed. With remarks on the proposed Suspension Bridge over the River Mercy, at Runcorn Gap; and some calculations of the strength of malleable iron, founded on experiments. 1824.

4.John Hicklin - Excursions in North Wales: a complete guide to the Tourist. Which contains an article on the bridges + a lovely image of the Menai Bridge by Rogers. However the highlight of this book is the bright gilt image to the front cover of the Britannia Tunnel Bridge with a train going across and boats underneath. 1851.

5.H Humphreys - Picturesque Scenery in North Wales. This is probably the most atmospheric Welsh Plate book. Which amongst others contains 3 lovely plates on the bridges. The frontispiece is a small B&W image of both bridges with boats underneath, a train going across and figures on the sides. Then there is another similar image, this time full page with much more detail. The third is a small view of Conwy Castle and Tubular bridge.

6.Newman & Co - Twelve Views of Colwyn Bay & Neighbourhood. Contains 1 small image of the Conway Tubular Bridge. A very scare title, probably 1878?

7.Newman & Co - Twelve Views in North Wales. Has a lovely image of Conway Tubular Bridge & Castle, an image of the Britannia Tubular and Menai Suspension Bridges, boats and trains.

8.Henry N Maynard - Handbook to the Crumlin Viaduct, Monmouthshire; with copious details of the design, dimensions and general proportions of the structure, description of the locality, etc. With illustrations. The mechanical and engineering details being deduced from the actual data used in designing and constructing the viaduct. 1862 Has a large coloured image of the viaduct + a couple of pull out charts.
