Graves, Robert von Ranke, poet and novelist, whose wartime experiences-during the battle of the Somme in 1916 he was so badly wounded in the lung that he was left for dead and was later able to read his own obituary in The Times-had a major impact upon his poetry, especially when combined with the thoroughgoing criticism which he had received from Edward Marsh, the editor of successive volumes of Georgian Poetry. In 1916 an impressive first volume of Graves's poems appeared, entitled Over the Brazier. See ODNB.
