See ODNB for a full Bio. Bonney, geologist, though said to be of indifferent health at times, was a very active alpine mountaineer and carried out numerous field investigations, even into old age. He died at his home, in Cambridge, unmarried, on 9 December 1923. His autobiography, Memories of a Long Life (1921), says little about Bonney's geological work, but records his impressive alpine achievements, gives fascinating insights into Cambridge life in the nineteenth century, and reveals the author as a tremendous trencherman with a seemingly inordinate interest in food.
