He died, still in debt, at his Lambeth Road address on 19 June 1823. The obituary in The Times the next day stated that: [h]e was a gentleman who, in the course of this protracted life, had suffered many fortunes, and had become known to so many people in every rank of society, that it hardly seems necessary to draw his character.
