Superbly bound. Ingelow, Jean [pseud. Orris], poet and writer whose Poems (1863) brought the first public recognition of her merit as a poet; this volume went through thirty editions in Ingelow's lifetime. It opens with 'Divided', a wistful lyric about lovers walking along opposite banks of a stream that eventually divides them forever. Poems also includes her popular ballad 'The High Tide on the Coast of Lincolnshire, 1571', an understated and affecting poem about loss of life in a sixteenth-century flood, and 'Songs of Seven', a meditation on the seven stages of woman's life.
