VG, 1st ed, 40 pls, 1847. In contemporary half calf with marbled boards, some blind tooling, corners and edges very lightly bumped and worn. Spine, lightly soiled, raised bands, decorative gilt tooling, titles in gilt to maroon calf label. Internally, frontis and the additional engraved title page present, [5], (viii-x), [2], [1], 2-628 pp, 40 pls, all edges reddened, bookplate to fpd (Williams Wynn), ink dedication to fep verso, lacking half title?, printed by C Whiting, Beaufort House, Strand, some light spotting to plate edges and versos, heavier to tps. Lever, novelist whose The Knight of Gwynne: a Tale of the Time of the Union (1847) was one of his best books, the work of mature imagination, dealing sensitively with the political wrangling and self-interest surrounding the passing of the Act of Union in 1800.
