Uncommon item on Higher Education in Wales [1879] First and only edition, the original grey soft printed paper covers bound into a modern maroon half morocco over red marbled boards, some wear. Spine, gilt tooling & titles, edges rubbed. Internally, red marbled endpapers, [2] ff blanks, printed outer cover leaf, title, [3], 4-63 pp, [1], [1] ff lower wrap, [2] ff blanks, lacking top corner of ffep, bookplate to fpd (Henry Blackwell), t.e.g., binders stamp to verso fep (Blackwell). Uncommon, only 1 copy listed in UK (NLW) no copy in the US. (209*136 mm). Although the motion failed, the debate was highly significant in Welsh history. It helped establish a political consensus that Wales required its own system of higher education. The arguments advanced by Vivian, Gladstone, and other Welsh MPs contributed to the movement that eventually led to the creation of: University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire (Cardiff, 1883) University College of North Wales (Bangor, 1884) and later the University of Wales (1893). The 1879 debate is therefore often regarded as an important milestone in the campaign for a national Welsh university system
