Combines the picturesque conventions of landscape painting with a strong interest in identifiable places, buildings & scenery. First edition, large folio, thirty-five lithographed plates after drawings by W. Westall, all with later expert hand colouring, plates watermarked 1814 & 1816, & printed by C. Hullmandel. Uncut in the original quarter brown roan over tan printed boards, smooth spine ruled & lettered in gilt, minor rubbing to extremities, tiny marginal tear to one plate, book label to fpd. 'Copies exist having an undated title & with twenty five plates only, that number being expressly mentioned on title-page' (Abbey) [ref: 296] Lithography offered Westall a particularly appropriate means of reproducing the soft, atmospheric qualities of his watercolour studies. Instead of translating the original drawing into the linear vocabulary of copperplate engraving, Hullmandel could reproduce something much closer to the appearance of the artist's own drawn marks.
