Woodward came to London from Derbyshire and immediately developed his artistic talents and became a popular and prolific designer of popular social caricatures much in the style of Bunbury. Generally his humour was course and extravagant as befitted a person who led a dissipated and drunken life but his work shows a wealth of imagination and insight into character, this was his first publication.
