This classic record of the beginnings of the railway age was also one of the last significant books illustrated with aquatints (Ray). Complete with Sixteen Hand Coloured Aquatint Plates, including the Three Very Scarce Folding Plates. Revised edition (first published in 1831 with six plates). large quarto, [2], 8 pp, thirteen hand coloured aquatint plates by S.G. Hughes and H. Pyall after T.T. Bury, this copy with three additional large folding hand coloured aquatint plates by SG Hughes [the last two after I Shaw]: View of the Intersection Bridge on the Line of the St Helens & Runcorn Gap Railway, A Train of the First Class of Carriages with the Mail [and] Train of the Second Class for Outside Passengers, and A Train of Wagons with Goods. &c. &c. [and] A Train of Carriages with Cattle. The extra plates watermarked 1831. Text watermarked 1832. Modern antique style quarter calf over marbled boards (sm paper tear) with the original red morocco gilt lettering label on front cover, vellum tips, tiny worm track in outer margin of title, two plates with small stains at lower margin, neatly repaired tear to one plate, just affecting image.
