First edition of this beautiful collection of 72 etchings, 30 hand tinted, after Gainsborough sketches, 30 hand-tinted, handsomely bound. Plates clean and fine, dated 1802-1805, some watermarked 1801, binding fresh and lovely, printed by Watts and Bridgewater, Queen-st. A superb example of this rare edition. (270*401 mm). (Ray 74. Tooley 231). Acclaimed as the father of modern landscape, and of modern pastoral (DNB), Gainsborough was also the favorite of British high society (Janson, History of Art, 452). Wells and Laporte etched these plates from 1802-05. While the first edition of this volume calls for 71 plates, this volume has one additional illustration: there are two different essays of the second plate. The less scarce later editions of this title contain only 60 plates.
