Quartos. First volume, 1865, with 203 plates (as called for). Second volume, 1868, 200 plates (as called for), 4 pp index. Both volumes with colour lithograph title pages. Each volume with a letterpress four page index which lists 'person', 'reign', 'year'. Contemporary half calf red morocco over lighter red cloth, spines richly gilt in compartments and with gilt lettering, marbled end papers, all edges gilt. Small ink stain to rear board edge of 'Male Costumes' and front board edge of 'Female Costumes', two leaves with outer margin restoration in 'Male Costumes', some light foxing to rear of a few plates, three old marginal stains (not affecting images). Overall, a very good copy of a title hard to assemble in both parts. Besides European costumes there are Chinese, African, Armenian and Hebrew costumes.
