Spine, gilt tooling & titles, edges bumped, short tear at base. Internally, half title, viii, followed by 35 leaves of descriptive text, watermarked J Whatman Turkey Mills 1822, each leaf accompanied by 2 plates (mostly with guards, 1 plate with no lettering, & 1 plate with lettering & date 1823), for a total of 70 plates,(only 35 called for), engraved by Edward Finden after Captain Batty, edges uncut, occasional light edge browning & spot, 2 book labels to fpd (Peter Bicknell & the armorial plate of JB Winterbotham) along with a bookseller label at base (William George's Son)FPD. (303*221 mm). A really clean, tight and interesting example. Wales was the subject of one of the earliest books with steel engravings... The art historian Samuel Redgrave thought highly of him (Batty) his industry was great, his works carefully and truthfully drawn, his architecture correct in proportion and outlines and his merits as a topographical draftsman deserves recognition.
