Half title, [6], (vii-x), 29 pp, [1) limitation, 6 pls (B&W wood engravings), 355*240 mm, printed on the Hedelberg Cylinder, part of the title, headings & marginal notes in brown, bound by Smith Settle, in quarter fawn cloth, gold rule, with brown on cream patterned boards, spine titled in gold, this is one of 200 ordinary copies, then there were 15 unbound copies & 25 specials. The 6 wood engravings by Hermes are stunning to say the least & published here by arrangement with the NLW for the first time. (Esslemont Hughes 19), had been intended for the cancelled Gregynog Press edition of 'Natural History of Selborne'. Prospectus loosely inserted. Hermes's imagery translates White's observations of the natural world into highly stylised black-and-white compositions. Her animals, birds, plants, trees and roots are built from dense networks of fine engraved lines, strong black-and-white contrasts & flowing organic forms.
